Hot-Rolled vs. Cold-Rolled Steel Sheets: Unveiling the "Material Division of Labor" from Construction Sites to Automotive Factories

In steel structure factories and new energy vehicle workshops, seemingly similar steel sheets actually conceal a "difference between hot and cold." According to data from the Iron and Steel Industry Association, China's hot-rolled steel sheet output is expected to exceed 120 million tons in 2025, while the demand for cold-rolled steel sheets is projected to grow at a rate of 8.3%. The two exhibit significant differences in processing techniques and application scenarios.

Hot-rolled steel sheets excel in "striking while the iron is hot": after continuous casting slabs undergo rolling at 1,200°C, they develop surface oxide layers and thickness tolerances of approximately ±0.5mm. Nevertheless, their excellent ductility makes them a mainstay in infrastructure. In cross-sea bridge projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Q345B hot-rolled steel sheets support hundred-meter-tall bridge pylons, with a cost of 300 yuan per square meter—40% lower than that of cold-rolled sheets. In contrast, cold-rolled steel sheets require six processes, including acid pickling and cold continuous rolling. Ultra-thin specifications of 0.3mm can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.03mm, making them essential for precision applications such as the ultra-thin panels of Haier refrigerators and Tesla battery casings. However, their price of 28,000 yuan per ton puts them out of reach for many small and medium-sized projects.

"Hot-rolled sheets are the 'backbone' of infrastructure, while cold-rolled sheets are the 'face' of manufacturing," industry experts point out. In 2025, the demand for thin-gauge cold-rolled sheets is expected to grow by 12% due to the trend toward lightweight home appliances, while hot-rolled pickled sheets are gaining traction in the agricultural machinery market thanks to their cost advantages.
